Easy Vegan Bean Burgers

vegan burgerThis is a super simple vegan bean burger recipe.  What I really like about it is that you can change it up with different ingredients that you might have on hand to vary the flavor.

  • 2 cans of low sodium kidney beans or 2 cups of cooked beans
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 cup of cooked brown rice
  • ¼ cup of tomato sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp Lawry’s season salt

Variations for these ingredients:

  • Beans – you can use any kind of beans.  Each brings a slightly different flavor
  • Brown rice – you can use any kind of rice that you might have on hand
  • Tomato sauce – here you can use any kind of red sauce.  The goal is to provide some liquid.  Could be ketchup, B B Que sauce, pizza sauce.
  • Spices – lots of room for experimentation.  You can try any spices you want.  You can even throw in a teaspoon or two of those prepackaged spice packets like fajita seasoning or Mexican taco flavor.  Try adding some smoke flavor for those wanting a more real “meat” experience.

    1. Rinse and drain the beans.  I actually cooked mine from raw very quickly in my Instapot.   I can cook most unsoaked beans in 50 minutes.  Very simple.
    2. In a bowl, mash the beans.  I use a potato masher but you can use a fork.  Leave some chunks. (see picture)
    3. Add in all the other ingredients and mix well
    4. Form patties by hand and put in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to help firm up.
    5. Fry in a pan flipping when slightly browned.   Or better yet, use a panini press.   The press works great for making a vegan bean burger.
